About Pike Howe

Standing on the eastern spur of the Lingmoor Fell ridge, this rocky outcrop offers a bird's-eye view directly down into Chapel Stile and across to the Langdale Pikes. While smaller than its parent summit, its position provides an intimate perspective on the Great Langdale valley floor and the surrounding slate-working landscape.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a linguistic double-up, combining the Cumbrian 'Pike' with the Old Norse 'haugr', both describing a prominent hill or mound, reflecting the area’s Norse-settler history.
  • As a Synge-classified summit, it is recognised for having a distinct drop of at least 30 metres on all sides, separating it from the higher ground of the main ridge to the west.
  • The summit provides an exceptional vantage point for studying the Langdale Pikes—specifically Harrison Stickle and Pike o' Stickle—offering a perspective that makes them feel much closer than they appear from the valley floor.
  • Directly below the southern slopes lie the extensive workings of the Elterwater and Chapel Stile slate quarries, where the distinctive green Lakeland slate has been extracted for generations.
  • It is a hill primarily visited by those who prefer their walking lists to be exhaustive and their descents into Chapel Stile to be as direct as possible.
