High Pike Haw

Sitting on the southern fringes of the Coniston Fells, this rocky Birkett offers a quiet perspective on the high ridges above. It is a rugged, heathery outpost that serves as an excellent vantage point for surveying the Duddon Estuary and the rolling moorland toward the Blawith Fells.

• •The name is a linguistic layer cake of Old Norse: 'Pike' stems from 'pík', referring to a pointed summit, while 'Haw' likely derives from 'haugr', meaning a hill or mound.
• •Positioned on the southern tail of the Coniston range, it acts as a transition point between the high crags of Dow Crag and the lower, peat-stained moorland that rolls south toward Lowick.
• •From the summit, the view south is dominated by the sprawling sands of the Duddon Estuary and the distinctive dark mass of Black Combe rising across the valley to the west.
• •It provides a wonderful sense of isolation, largely because most people heading this way are looking at their boots while trying to find the path back to Coniston.
