About High Light Haw

Located above the south-western shore of Coniston Water, this rugged Wainwright Outlying fell is a compact mixture of rock and heather. Despite its modest height, the summit offers a commanding perspective of the bigger Coniston giants and a classic, elongated view down the full length of the lake.

Did You Know?

  • The name 'Haw' is derived from the Old Norse haugr, describing a small hill or mound, while 'Light' likely refers to the open, cleared nature of the fell compared to the historically wooded valleys below.
  • In his book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, Alfred Wainwright describes the ascent of this fell and its neighbours as an "uninterrupted joy," noting the absence of walls and fences on the open common.
  • From the summit, the view south-east looks directly down the length of Coniston Water, allowing walkers to trace the path of the Steam Gondola as it moves between Coniston and Lake Bank.
  • Despite the ambitious name, the 'High' in High Light Haw grants you only an extra 16 metres of elevation over its neighbour, Low Light Haw.
