Did You Know?

  • The name is rooted in Old Norse, combining the personal name 'Finnr' with 'thveit', signifying a clearing or meadow belonging to a man named Finn.
  • Alfred Wainwright devoted a chapter to this hill in his 'The Outlying Fells of Lakeland' guide, describing the walk around the nearby High Dam tarn as 'a classic' and 'the loveliest of its kind.'
  • The lower slopes are inextricably linked to the Stott Park Bobbin Mill; for over a century, the surrounding woodlands were coppiced to provide the birch and alder needed for textile production.
  • From the rocky summit, the view stretches directly across the water to the steep, dark profile of Gummers How and northwards toward the higher silhouettes of the Coniston Fells.
  • Given the modest ascent, the most strenuous part of the day is often finding a parking space in the tiny village of Finsthwaite.
