About Doddick Fell

Rising steeply above Threlkeld, this sharp spur provides a direct, airy line onto the Blencathra massif. While less technical than its neighbour Hall’s Fell, it offers a dramatic sense of scale as the ground drops away into the deep troughs of Doddick Gill and Scaley Beck.

Did You Know?

  • The name is rooted in the Old Norse 'doddi', meaning a rounded hill or a limb of a mountain. This reflects its geography as a distinct southern leg of the Blencathra massif, separated from its neighbours by the deep ravines of Doddick Gill and Scaley Beck.
  • While Alfred Wainwright omitted it from his main list of 214 fells, Bill Birkett recognised it as a separate summit in its own right. The 742m high point is located at a prominent narrowing of the ridge where the ground transitions from grass to stone.
  • The ridge offers a fantastic vantage point looking directly down into the deep, heathery bowl of the Glenderamackin valley, with the long northern slopes of Great Dodd and the Helvellyn range dominating the southern horizon.
  • The ascent from Threlkeld via the zig-zagging path below the fell is a relentless pull. Once the ridge is gained, the terrain becomes a delightful walkway that leads directly toward the higher plateau of the main mountain.
  • It is the perfect choice for the walker who wants the prestige of a ridge ascent without the indignity of having to crawl on all fours over the more exposed sections of Sharp Edge.
