About Brant Fell

Rising gently above the bustle of Windermere, this accessible Wainwright Outlying Fell offers an exceptional reward for modest effort. Characterised by rocky outcrops and short turf, the summit provides a sweeping panorama over the lake’s islands toward the jagged silhouettes of the Langdale Pikes and the bulky Coniston fells.

Did You Know?

  • The name is rooted in the Old Norse word 'brant', meaning steep, referring to the sharp, rocky escarpments that break up its otherwise grassy slopes.
  • Alfred Wainwright held the hill in high regard, describing the view from the top as "a very grand one" and noting that it offers a perspective of Windermere that few other fells can match.
  • The summit features two distinct rocky plinths; the southern outcrop is the true top and serves as an excellent vantage point for identifying Belle Isle and the smaller islands of the central lake.
  • It sits at the very end of the Dales Way, a 78-mile long-distance path from Ilkley, making it a popular final 'summit' for walkers completing the trek.
  • It is a rare example of a hill where the effort-to-view ratio is so heavily skewed in the walker’s favour that reaching the top feels slightly like cheating.
