Adam Seat

Situated on the high ridge between Kentmere Pike and Harter Fell, Adam Seat is a broad, peat-covered plateau. Often overlooked by those sticking to the main Horseshoe path, it offers a desolate, quiet beauty and exceptional views down into the wild Upper Kentmere valley.

• •Adam Seat reaches a height of exactly 666 metres (2,185 feet), a measurement that frequently catches the eye of map-readers for its association with the 'Number of the Beast.'
• •While it was not included in Alfred Wainwright's Pictorial Guides, the fell is classified as a Birkett and a Dewey, marking an important high point on the watershed between the Kentmere and Mardale valleys.
• •The summit is part of the Lincomb Tarns Formation, a geological layer of volcaniclastic sandstone that contributes to the fell's characteristically flat and moisture-retentive topography.
• •The late Maureen Colquhoun, Britain’s first openly lesbian MP, was a passionate advocate for the preservation of these fells; she lived in nearby Ambleside and served as a member of the Lake District National Park Authority.
• •The summit plateau is essentially a giant, high-altitude sponge, where navigating to the highest point often involves a high-stakes game of 'the floor is lava' to avoid sinking into the black Lakeland peat.
