East Kip

The highest point of the Pentland Hills, standing at 534 metres above Edinburgh's southern skyline. A popular ascent from Balerno or the Harlaw Reservoir path, the summit offers expansive views across the Firth of Forth to Fife and west to the Southern Uplands. Often climbed alongside neighbouring West Kip in a satisfying ridge walk.

• •The name 'Kip' derives from the Scots word meaning a pointed or projecting hill, aptly describing the distinctive profile visible from Edinburgh and the surrounding lowlands.
• •East Kip serves as the highest summit in the Pentland Hills, a fact that surprises many walkers who assume Scald Law holds that honour—it doesn't, falling short by over 50 metres.
• •The hill is frequently paired with West Kip (550m) in a classic Pentland ridge walk, the two summits separated by a gentle col that makes for straightforward navigation in most conditions.
• •From the summit cairn on a clear day, Arthur's Seat, the Bass Rock, and Ben Lomond are all visible, making it one of the finest viewpoints in the Edinburgh area despite its modest height.
• •Harlaw Reservoir at the hill's northern base was constructed in the 1840s as a compensation reservoir for the Water of Leith, and today provides one of the most popular starting points for the ascent.
