Did You Know?

  • The name 'Law' comes from the Old English hlāw, a term widely used across Northumberland and the Scottish Borders to describe a prominent, rounded hill or a burial mound.
  • From the summit, you can look directly down into the College Valley, a managed estate that remains one of the most tranquil and vehicle-restricted valleys in the Northumberland National Park.
  • The hill serves as an excellent vantage point for spotting Iron Age history, with the significant ramparts of Yeavering Bell to the east and Ring Chesters to the south both clearly visible on the skyline.
  • Unlike many of its neighbours which are capped with deep heather or peat hags, the terrain here is predominantly short-grazed grass, making for unusually fast and easy-going walking.
  • The name 'Cold Law' is a rare example of topographic honesty; its position on the northern edge of the range leaves it entirely undefended against the biting winds sweeping in from the North Sea.
