About Bridge-end Pasture

Rising above the confluence of the River Ashop and Ladybower Reservoir, this gritstone ridge offers a quieter alternative to the nearby honeypot summits. The terrain consists of rough grazing and moorland, providing an excellent vantage point to look across the water toward the sharp, distinctive silhouette of Win Hill.

Did You Know?

  • The name Bridge-end Pasture refers to the hill's historical use as grazing land above the old bridge over the River Ashop. Much of the valley landscape it once overlooked, including the village of Ashopton, was lost in the 1940s when the Ladybower Reservoir was flooded.
  • The summit offers an unobstructed view of the Great Ridge to the south, allowing walkers to trace the entire skyline from the landslide-scarred face of Mam Tor through to the pyramid-like peak of Lose Hill.
  • The hill is skirted by a prominent track known locally as the 'Roman Road', which formed part of the ancient transport link between the Roman forts of Navio in the Hope Valley and Melandra near Glossop.
  • Despite its status as a Tump, the hill is frequently treated by Kinder-bound walkers as a slightly inconvenient gritstone speed bump on the way to the much larger plateau of Kinder Scout.
