About Win Hill

Overlooking the meeting point of the Hope and Derwent valleys, this gritstone-capped peak is one of the Peak District’s most recognisable landmarks. Its distinctive pointed profile, Win Hill Pike, offers a rugged summit with panoramic views over Ladybower Reservoir and the Great Ridge, making the steep climb from Hope well worth the effort.

Did You Know?

  • Local folklore attributes the name to a 7th-century battle between the armies of Northumbria and Wessex. According to legend, King Edwin’s forces occupied this summit, while King Cuichelm’s men held the opposite ridge—now Lose Hill—with the victors naming the hills after the outcome.
  • The summit is crowned by a distinctive gritstone outcrop known as Win Hill Pike. Despite its modest height, the rocky nature of the 'Pike' gives it a more mountainous character than the rounded, grassy profiles of many neighbouring Dark Peak summits.
  • The hill serves as a spectacular viewpoint for the Upper Derwent Valley. Looking north, you get a direct aerial-style view over the Ladybower Reservoir and its massive dam wall, while looking west provides a perfect profile of the Great Ridge stretching from Mam Tor to Back Tor.
  • For those seeking a challenge, the ascent via Parkin Clough is one of the steepest in the Peak District. This direct route climbs through dense woodland, gaining roughly 250 metres of elevation in less than a mile.
  • Ascending via the direct route through Parkin Clough is an excellent way to turn a pleasant Sunday walk into a silent test of cardiovascular endurance and personal regret.
