Geology
As you hike, you are walking over the Ochil Volcanic Formation, a mix of ancient lava flows and pebbly rock.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from Gaelic, with 'beinn' meaning hill or mountain, though the second element 'gengie' is less clear and may relate to a personal name or local feature now lost to time.
  • The hill sits on the Devonian lava plateau that forms the Ochils, a landscape shaped by ancient volcanic activity and later carved by the dramatic Ochil Fault which creates the steep southern escarpment visible from the Forth valley.
  • Despite its modest height, Bengengie Hill claims three classifications: Dodd, Donald Dewey, and Tump, placing it among Scotland's catalogued lesser hills that reward walkers seeking quieter summits away from the main Munro routes.
  • The hill overlooks Glen Devon to the south, one of only two main road crossings through the entire Ochil range, the historic route connecting the Forth valley with Strathearn and the Highlands beyond.
