About Ben Buck NE Top [Burnfoot Hill]

A northeastern outlier of the Ochil Hills north of the Forth valley, rising to 583 metres above Glen Devon. This grassy summit sits on the undulating Devonian lava plateau characteristic of the range, offering a quieter alternative to the more popular peaks further west. The ascent crosses typical Ochil moorland terrain.

Geology
Beneath your boots lies the Ochil Volcanic Formation. This foundation is made of ancient, hardened lava rocks known as basaltic-andesite and trachyandesite.

Did You Know?

  • The name 'Burnfoot Hill' reflects the common Scots naming pattern describing a location at the foot or lower reaches of a burn, though this summit actually marks the higher ground of the Ben Buck massif rather than its base.
  • The hill sits on the Ochil plateau formed by Devonian lava extrusions, part of the same volcanic geology that created the dramatic southern escarpment visible from Stirling and the Hillfoots Villages below.
  • Glen Devon, which runs along the northern flank of this hill, carries one of only two major roads crossing the entire Ochil range, the other being Glenfarg to the east.
  • The undulating character of the Ochil plateau means this summit, like many in the range, lacks the prominence of a dramatic peak despite its respectable height of 583 metres.
