About Beinn Gharbh SE Top

A subsidiary summit on the southeastern shoulder of Beinn Gharbh in the remote northwest Highlands, this modest Dodd and Tump rises to 512 metres above the wild Assynt landscape. The rocky, heathery terrain is characteristic of this ancient gneiss country, where even the smaller tops demand competent navigation through trackless ground.

Did You Know?

  • The name Beinn Gharbh derives from Scottish Gaelic, meaning 'rough mountain' or 'rugged mountain', an apt description for the craggy, boulder-strewn character of this massif and its outlying tops.
  • As a classified Dodd (a hill between 2,000 and 2,499 feet high with a drop of at least 50 feet), this southeastern top represents one of hundreds of subsidiary summits across Scotland that attract dedicated peak-baggers beyond the more famous Munros and Corbetts.
  • The hill sits within the Assynt region, an area underlain by some of the oldest rocks in Europe—Lewisian gneiss formed over 3 billion years ago—giving the landscape its distinctively knobbly, ice-scoured appearance.
