About Meall Dubh

Rising above the southern end of Loch a’ Bhraoin, this rugged Highland top offers a quiet vantage point amidst the giants of the Northwest. Its terrain is quintessential Ross-shire—rocky outcrops and deep heather. From the summit, the jagged spires of An Teallach dominate the northern skyline, while Sgùrr nan Clach Geala towers to the east.

Did You Know?

  • The Gaelic name translates as 'Black Hill' or 'Black Rounded Hill.' In the Highlands, 'Meall' typically describes a bulky, lump-like hill, a common sight in this landscape of Torridonian sandstone and gneiss.
  • Positioned just off the A832 'Destitution Road', the hill overlooks the remote waters of Loch a' Bhraoin. It serves as a gateway to the 'Great Wilderness' of Fisherfield and Letterewe to the west.
  • The summit offers a distinctively close-up view of the Fannichs' western flanks and the impressive glacial trough of the Dirrie More.
  • Given there are at least thirty other hills named Meall Dubh in Scotland, the primary challenge for walkers is ensuring they have climbed the correct one before ticking it off a personal list.
