About Whimble
Whimble is the Radnor Forest’s most aesthetically pleasing curve, a near-perfect dome that narrowly misses mountain status by a mere 1.2 metres. It looms over New Radnor like a giant, grassy upturned bowl, offering superb views for significantly less effort than its higher, boggier neighbours.

Did You Know?
- •This distinctive hill is part of the ancient Radnor Forest, which was once a royal hunting ground where medieval kings chased deer instead of summit cairns. The surrounding 'forest' is now more of a high-altitude moorland than a dense woodland.
- •It stands at 598.8 metres tall, making it the ultimate victim of height envy as it sits tantalisingly close to the official 600-metre mountain threshold. If you brought a few thick paving slabs to the top, you could technically promote it to a mountain yourself.
- •The summit offers a commanding view of the Vale of Radnor, a landscape shaped by ancient glacial activity and Silurian mudstones. From here, the village of New Radnor looks like a toy set designed to be guarded by this giant green sentry.
- •Local geography enthusiasts often point out its prominence, as it possesses a drop of over 150 metres from the surrounding land. This isolation makes it look far more intimidating from the A44 road than its sub-600m elevation suggests.
- •The climb is a relentless, grassy treadmill that offers zero secrets and nowhere to hide from the Welsh wind. By the time you reach the top, you will be so out of breath that the 'panoramic views' are mostly just colourful spots dancing in your eyes.
