About Foel Benddin

Rising steeply above the head of Cwm Cywarch, this grassy Tump offers a quieter vantage point within the southern Arans. Its summit provides an earned perspective of the craggy eastern face of Aran Fawddwy and the wild, rolling moorland that defines this less-trodden corner of the Eryri National Park.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Welsh as 'bare hill of the fort-head', with Foel meaning bare or bald and Benddin likely a mutation of Pen-din, though there is no archaeological evidence of a prehistoric hillfort on its summit.
  • The summit is a prime spot for observing the dramatic cliffs of Craig Cywarch to the north, a formidable wall of rock that marks the start of the high Aran ridge and is a well-known challenge for rock climbers.
  • Most walkers encounter the hill as a short detour from the main ascent toward Glasgwm, crossing the frequently saturated plateau of Bwlch y Fign.
  • In common with many peaks in the Arans, the terrain underfoot is often more liquid than solid, ensuring that any 'bare' feet suggested by the name are likely to end up very wet.
