About Moel Eilio

Rising above the Conwy Valley on the eastern edge of the Carneddau, this rounded Tump offers a tranquil, grassy escape from the rugged high peaks. Its broad summit provides an exceptional vantage point for surveying the historic Bwlch-y-Ddeufaen pass and the distant, sea-lashed limestone cliffs of the Great Orme.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Welsh 'Moel', meaning a bare or bald hill, and 'Eilio', which is likely an obscure personal name. It is frequently confused with the significantly taller Moel Eilio that stands near Llanberis on the opposite side of the Snowdonia massif.
  • The hill overlooks the Bwlch-y-Ddeufaen, or 'Pass of the Two Stones', an ancient mountain crossing marked by two large prehistoric standing stones that has been used by travellers and soldiers since the Bronze Age.
  • The summit serves as a quiet grandstand for the northern Carneddau, offering clear views of the high, undulating ridge that connects Drum to Foel Fras to the west.
  • To the east, the landscape drops away sharply into the fertile Conwy Valley, providing a lush contrast to the peat hags and exposed moorland found in the interior of the range.
  • It is the perfect summit for the walker who values peace over prestige, as most visitors to this part of the world are too busy hurrying toward the 3,000-foot peaks to notice this quieter neighbour.
