Did You Know?

  • Beinn a' Chaorainn translates from Scottish Gaelic as the 'Mountain of the Rowan Tree.' The summit's more specific local name, Sgorr Craobh a' Chaorainn, means the 'Peak of the Rowan Tree,' identifying a landscape where these resilient trees were once a prominent feature of the rocky gullies.
  • From the summit, you can look directly down the 28-kilometre length of Loch Shiel toward the sea. Looking northeast, the Glenfinnan Viaduct and its iconic concrete arches are visible, framed by the steep slopes of the neighbouring Streap.
  • The hill sits within the Moidart and Ardgour wild land area, characterized by fjord-like scenery. Unlike many overgrazed parts of the Highlands, the lower slopes here retain significant native woodland, including birch and oak that transition into the open moorland of the higher ridges.
  • The typical approach from the Callop bridge follows an old drovers' route. This path was historically significant as one of the few ways to traverse the rugged terrain between the head of Loch Shiel and the coastal settlements near Loch Moidart.
  • Its classification as a Tump effectively guards its privacy; most walkers bypass it for the nearby 3,000-foot peaks, leaving the expansive views of the Ardgour hills entirely to those who don't mind the lack of a badge.
