About Mynydd Gwerngraig

Sitting at the eastern tail of the Cadair Idris ridge, this rugged peak offers a steep, craggy introduction to the massif. Its slopes drop sharply toward the Tal-y-llyn Pass, providing a sense of scale and drama often missed by those heading straight for the more famous Penygader.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Welsh as 'Mountain of the Alder Crag', likely referring to the wet, wooded ground at the foot of its steep eastern face where it meets the valley floor.
  • It serves as the first major high point for those ascending Cadair Idris from the east via the Gau Graig path, a rugged and quieter alternative to the popular Minffordd and Pony paths.
  • From the summit, there is a clear, plunging view down into the Tal-y-llyn Pass, with the distinctive silhouettes of the Tarren hills—Tarren y Gesail and Tarrenhendre—dominating the southern horizon.
  • The hill marks the start of the dramatic volcanic escarpment that runs westwards towards the sea, characterized here by dark, shattered rock and steep heather slopes.
  • It is the ideal spot to practice the art of looking meaningful while checking a map, primarily to disguise the fact that the initial climb from the road is considerably steeper than it appeared from the car.
