About Gau Graig

Standing as the eastern shoulder of the Cadair Idris range, this Nuttall rises steeply above the Cross Foxes pass. While often bypassed for the main summit, its rocky plateau offers a rugged character and far-reaching views across the Mawddach Estuary and toward the northern peaks of the Rhinogydd.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Welsh as 'False Crag' (Gau meaning false or hollow, and Graig meaning rock). This likely refers to its appearance from certain angles below, where its steep eastern escarpment suggests a more formidable peak than the relatively flat summit plateau reveals.
  • Gau Graig is the first summit reached when walking the Cadair Idris ridge from the east. The ascent from the Cross Foxes pass involves a stiff climb through bracken and over rocky outcrops before the terrain levels out towards Mynydd Moel.
  • The summit provides an excellent vantage point for surveying the Mawddach Estuary as it snakes toward the sea at Barmouth, with the rugged, heather-clad silhouettes of the Rhinogydd range clearly visible to the north across the valley.
  • Like much of the massif, the hill is formed from Ordovician volcanic rocks. Its northern and eastern flanks are characterized by dramatic dolerite cliffs that have resisted erosion more effectively than the surrounding mudstone.
  • Despite being a classified Nuttall in its own right, Gau Graig is frequently treated by walkers as little more than a breathless, early-morning tax to be paid on the way to the higher peaks further west.
