About Crockalough

Rising above the village of Moneyneany in the eastern Sperrin Mountains, this modest Tump offers a quiet escape onto the heather-clad moorland of County Londonderry. The terrain is typical of the range—soft, peaty, and occasionally pathless—rewarding a short climb with expansive views across the Moyola Valley toward the distant summit of Sawel Mountain.

Did You Know?

  • Its name is derived from the Irish Cnoc an Locha, meaning 'hill of the lake,' which likely refers to the waters of Lough Ouske situated in the upland dip between Crockalough and its northern neighbours.
  • The summit serves as an excellent vantage point for surveying the eastern Sperrins, offering clear views of the massive, rounded form of Slieve Gallion to the south and the high ridges overlooking the Glenshane Pass.
  • On a clear day, the view extends southeast across the Mid-Ulster lowlands to the waters of Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles.
  • While the name suggests a single body of water, the surrounding terrain is frequently saturated enough to convince most walkers they are actually traversing a series of very small, very cold islands.
