About Mullaghmore

Rising above the village of Moneyneany, this prominent Sperrin peak is easily identified by the transmitter mast near its summit. The climb follows a service road before opening onto peat-covered slopes. Reaching the top earns a vast panorama across Lough Neagh and the distant, rugged silhouettes of the Mourne Mountains.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Irish An Mullach Mór, which translates simply as 'the great summit.' While not the highest peak in the Sperrins, its isolated position and steep western face give it a presence that justifies the title.
  • The summit is a significant landmark in the eastern Sperrins due to the television and radio transmitter located just below the highest point. For walkers, the service road providing access to the mast offers a firm, if steep, footing for much of the ascent from the Moneyneany side.
  • From the 550-metre summit, the view south is dominated by the vast expanse of Lough Neagh, while looking west provides a clear profile of Sawel Mountain and Meenard, the highest points in the range.
  • The hill sits within the Sperrin Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, characterized by its ancient metamorphic rock—primarily Dalradian schists—which creates the rounded, heather-clad silhouettes typical of this part of County Londonderry.
  • The presence of the service road makes this one of the few peaks in the region where you can gain significant height without immediately succumbing to the infamous Sperrin bog, though the final stretch to the true cairn will usually remind your boots exactly where they are.
