About Seefin [Sui Finn]

Rising above the village of Killavullen, this prominent Tump marks the high point of the Nagles Mountains. While commercial forestry dominates the lower slopes, the summit offers an expansive perspective over the Blackwater Valley, stretching towards the distant, jagged silhouettes of the Galty Mountains and the Knockmealdowns to the north.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Irish Suí Finn, translating to 'Finn's Seat'. In Irish mythology, such peaks were legendary resting places where the giant hunter-warrior Fionn mac Cumhaill would sit to survey his territory.
  • Although often overshadowed by larger ranges nearby, Seefin is the county top of the Nagles Mountains, a range composed primarily of Devonian Old Red Sandstone.
  • The summit is a significant vantage point for the Blackwater Valley; looking south on a clear day, the view extends across the rolling landscape of mid-Cork towards the distant coastal uplands.
  • The peak is topped by a large telecommunications mast, which serves as a useful navigation aid for walkers and makes the hill easily identifiable from the N72 road below.
  • Despite being named as a seat for a legendary hero, the modern addition of a high-security radio compound suggests Finn would have a much harder time finding a comfortable place to sit today.
