Did You Know?
- •The name stems from the Irish An Carn, meaning 'the cairn,' identifying it as a place where a significant pile of stones—likely a burial marker or boundary point—once stood on the summit.
- •Geologically, the hill is composed of Old Red Sandstone, typical of the ridges in this part of County Cork which were folded into existence during the Variscan orogeny.
- •The summit provides a clear line of sight to the north over the limestone lowlands of the Blackwater Valley toward the Galty Mountains, including the distinct peak of Galtymore.
- •Despite its modest elevation, the hill is a useful navigational marker for walkers on the Avondhu Way, which skirts the northern flanks of the Nagle range nearby.
