About Slieve Gallion NE Top
Resting at the eastern edge of the Sperrin Mountains, this prominent shoulder is defined by its telecommunications mast and the narrow access road serving it. Though slightly lower than the main summit, it offers a more immediate, commanding perspective over the Lough Neagh basin and the agricultural landscape of mid-Ulster.

Did You Know?
- •The name derives from the Irish Sliabh gCallann, meaning the mountain of Callann. Local lore identifies Callann as a legendary hound belonging to the giant Finn MacCool, which was said to have been buried on these slopes.
- •As the easternmost outpost of the Sperrins, the summit provides an exceptional vantage point over the vast expanse of Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles, and the flatlands of the Bann Valley.
- •A narrow tarmac service road leads directly to the transmitter station on the summit, making this one of the few high points in the region accessible without navigating the thick blanket bog typical of the Northern Irish uplands.
- •The mountain occupies a historic boundary position, where the three ancient parishes of Desertmartin, Lissan, and Ballinascreen meet.
- •While the main summit of Slieve Gallion is technically higher, the NE Top is the one that actually has to work for a living, hosting the infrastructure that keeps mid-Ulster connected.
