About Oughtmore

Rising above the village of Dunnamore in the Sperrin Mountains, this modest Marilyn offers a quiet, peat-heavy ascent. The terrain is typical of the Tyrone moorlands—unfenced and often boggy underfoot. From the summit, the view stretches across the Ballinderry River valley toward the larger peaks of Mullaghaneany and Meenard.

Did You Know?

  • The name is an anglicisation of the Irish Ucht Mór, meaning 'great breast' or 'large hill-slope', describing its rounded, bulky appearance against the skyline.
  • Because it possesses over 150 metres of prominence, it is classified as a Marilyn, a status it shares with much larger mountains like Slieve Donard.
  • The summit offers an excellent vantage point over the upper reaches of the Ballinderry River, with the dark, heathery profiles of Mullaghbolig and Meenard clearly visible to the north.
  • Nearby archaeological sites at Beaghmore suggest the surrounding landscape has been inhabited and farmed for over 4,000 years.
  • Attempting to keep your boots dry on the approach is an exercise in futility; the Sperrin mosses are remarkably efficient at claiming any footwear not securely tied.
