About Moel yr Ewig

Moel yr Ewig, the 'Hill of the Hind', is a high-altitude moorland bump tucked away in the Berwyns. It offers a masterclass in solitude and Welsh peat-hags. It's the perfect spot for hikers who find the nearby Cadair Berwyn far too crowded and dry for their liking.

Did You Know?

  • Rising to 695 meters, this peak serves as a vital topographical bridge on the high ridge between Cadair Berwyn and the remote Post Gwyn. It overlooks the head of the Tanat Valley, offering some of the most isolated vistas in Northeast Wales.
  • The name Moel yr Ewig translates to 'Hill of the Hind', pointing to a time when these high moors were populated by female red deer. It remains a silent, haunting landscape that feels largely unchanged since the medieval era.
  • Much of the mountain is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its rare blanket bog habitat. This means the mud currently engulfing your boots is technically a site of national ecological importance.
  • In heavy mist, the plateau becomes a navigational labyrinth where every peat hag looks identical to the last one. Without a compass or the local fence line, you are essentially participating in a very slow, damp game of 'guess where the path is'.
  • The summit is less of a dramatic peak and more of a subtle suggestion that you should have stayed in the pub. You haven't truly experienced the Berwyns until you've stood on this 'top' while water discovers exactly how waterproof your trousers aren't.
