About Slieve Aghkerane [Corraun Hill East Top]
Rising above the narrow neck of the Corraun Peninsula, this rugged Marilyn offers a wild, peat-covered alternative to its more famous Achill neighbours. Its broad plateau rewards walkers with a truly exceptional vantage point overlooking the island-studded waters of Clew Bay and the sprawling, uninhabited wilderness of the Nephin Beg Range to the north.

Did You Know?
- •The name likely derives from the Irish 'Sliabh Eachréine', which translates to the mountain of the horse-plain, a reference to the relatively level, if boggy, plateau that characterises the higher reaches of the peninsula.
- •The summit is often visited as part of a high-level horseshoe walk around the Corraun massif, usually paired with its slightly higher western neighbour, Corraun Hill.
- •From the top, walkers can clearly pick out the distinct quartzite cone of Croagh Patrick across the water to the south, while the massive cliffs of Slievemore on Achill Island dominate the western horizon.
- •Given the exposed nature of the Corraun Peninsula, the summit serves as an excellent, if involuntary, testing ground for the durability of any 'waterproof' hiking gear against the full force of an Atlantic gale.
