About Been Hill [Beann]

Rising above the northern coast of the Iveragh Peninsula, this 651m Hewitt offers a rugged, grassy ascent from near Derrymore. Part of a high, undulating ridge, its summit provides an exceptional vantage point over Dingle Bay toward the Slieve Mish Mountains and the distant, jagged profile of the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a direct anglicisation of the Irish word Beann, which translates to peak, pinnacle, or horn, a common descriptor for the prominent heights that define the Kerry skyline.
  • Standing at 651 metres, it is categorised as a Hewitt, a classification marking it as one of the 209 Irish peaks over two thousand feet with at least thirty metres of drop on all sides.
  • The summit serves as a prime lookout for the northern Iveragh, with the expanse of Dingle Bay and the western tip of the Dingle Peninsula—including the Blasket Islands—visible on a clear day.
  • Walkers often traverse this peak as part of a longer ridge walk connecting it to the sacred mountain of Knocknadobar to the west, following the high ground above the waters of Coonanna Harbour.
  • Despite the name's suggestion of a sharp peak, the real work is often found in the saturated peat hags of the high cols, which provide a remarkably effective adhesive for any boots not firmly tied.
