Did You Know?
- •The name derives from the Irish Cnoc Shean-chuillinn, which translates as 'hill of the old holly,' suggesting the vegetation that likely colonised these slopes before the development of the current open moorland.
- •Most walkers approach the hill from the Vee Pass to the east, a famous gap in the mountains renowned for its dramatic rhododendron displays in early summer and its panoramic views across the Tipperary plains.
- •From the summit, the vista northwards is dominated by the long, high profile of the Galtee Mountains, with the sharp pyramid of Galtymore clearly visible across the broad expanse of the Golden Vale.
- •The hill sits directly above Bay Lough, a corrie lake steeped in local folklore; it is said to be the bottomless home of 'Petticoat Loose,' a legendary figure from Irish ghost stories.
- •The summit plateau is a masterclass in Irish peat hags; on a misty day, finding the highest point becomes a slow-motion exercise in navigating a sodden, black labyrinth that seems designed to test the waterproofing of your boots.
