Did You Know?

  • The name Cnoc na dTobar translates from Irish as ‘Hill of the Wells’. It refers to a series of sacred springs at the foot of the mountain, most notably St. Fursey’s Well, which has been a site of ritual and healing since medieval times.
  • It is one of Ireland's principal 'holy mountains', sharing a spiritual lineage with Croagh Patrick and Mount Brandon. The current pilgrimage infrastructure, including the fourteen large stone Stations of the Cross, was established in the 1880s by the local parish priest, Canon Brosnan.
  • From the 690-metre summit, the view to the southwest is dominated by the jagged silhouettes of Skellig Michael and Little Skellig, while to the north, the entire length of the Dingle Peninsula is visible across the whitecaps of Dingle Bay.
  • Although it is classified as a Marilyn and a Hewitt, the experience of the climb is defined by its zigzagging pilgrim path. This track provides a much firmer footing than the boggy, pathless slopes typical of the northern Iveragh hills.
  • The fourteen stations provide excellent, culturally sanctioned excuses to stop and catch your breath, though the final push to the summit cross may still require a level of devotion that borders on the athletic.
