About Masatiompan

Rising dramatically above the Atlantic on the northern tip of the Brandon range, this rugged Hewitt offers a wilder alternative to its famous neighbor. Its western flanks plunge directly into the sea from some of Ireland's highest sea cliffs, providing a vertiginous, windswept experience for those traversing the ridge from Mount Brandon.

Did You Know?

  • The name comes from the Irish 'Mása Tiompáin', which translates to 'the thigh of the hillock'. In Irish mountain naming, 'mása' refers to a broad, rounded slope, while 'tiompáin' describes the hump-like profile of the summit.
  • It forms the northern terminus of the Brandon massif. While most visitors congregate on the main summit of Mount Brandon to the south, this peak offers superior views across the Magharee Islands and the Seven Hogs archipelago scattered across Tralee Bay.
  • The western face of the mountain comprises the cliffs of Brandon Head. These are some of the highest sea cliffs in Ireland, dropping hundreds of metres almost vertically into the ocean, creating a landscape that feels significantly more remote than its elevation suggests.
  • The mountain is situated along the 'Saints' Road' (Cosán na Naomh), an ancient pilgrimage route. Near the northern approach, an Ogham stone stands as a reminder of the area’s early Christian significance.
  • If the Atlantic mist rolls in—as it frequently does—the 761-metre drop into the sea becomes considerably less terrifying, mostly because you won't be able to see further than your own boots.
