About Garnedd Uchaf [Carnedd Gwenllian]

Tucked within the vast, high-altitude plateau of the Carneddau, this stony summit offers a sense of immense scale rather than dramatic peaks. It is a wild, boulder-strewn place, often bypassed on the main ridge walk but rewarding those who stop with expansive views over the Menai Strait towards Anglesey.

Did You Know?

  • Historically known as Garnedd Uchaf, which translates from Welsh as 'Highest Cairn', the summit was officially renamed Carnedd Gwenllian in 2009. This change was made to commemorate Princess Gwenllian, the only daughter of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last native Prince of Wales.
  • The hill is a significant milestone for peak-baggers as it qualifies as both a Hewitt and a Nuttall, standing as one of the few points in Wales to exceed the 3,000-foot mark outside of the main Snowdon Massif or Glyderau.
  • The summit offers a unique perspective on the 'back' of the Carneddau; looking south, the massive, dark cliffs of Yr Elen and Carnedd Llywelyn dominate the skyline, while to the north, the land slopes gently away toward the Irish Sea and the Great Orme.
  • The terrain here is a classic example of a periglacial blockfield, where centuries of freeze-thaw action have shattered the rock into a chaotic pavement of gritstone boulders that can be surprisingly difficult to navigate in low visibility.
  • Despite the name 'Garnedd Uchaf' suggesting it is the highest point, it is comfortably overtopped by most of its immediate neighbours, proving that 19th-century mapmakers weren't always checking their barometers when recording local names.
