About Crib y Ddysgl

This narrow, rocky crest serves as the dramatic second act of the Snowdon Horseshoe. Standing as the second-highest peak in Wales, its terrain is rugged and strictly alpine in character. Whether approached from the airy traverse of Crib Goch or the steep slopes of Bwlch Glas, the summit offers a sense of high-mountain isolation.

Geology
You are walking on layers of volcanic ash and solidified lava. These rocks formed from ancient eruptions and molten material that cooled to build the mountain.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Welsh as 'Ridge of the Dish,' likely describing the bowl-like shape of the glacial cwm it overlooks. It is frequently referred to as Garnedd Ugain ('Cairn of the Twenty'), a name thought by some to refer to a Roman legion that once passed through the area.
  • As a Hewitt and Nuttall standing at 1065 metres, it is a primary objective for those undertaking the Welsh 3000s challenge. It represents the highest point on the ridge before walkers descend slightly to Bwlch Glas to join the main tourist paths.
  • The summit offers a spectacular perspective of the Snowdon Mountain Railway as it climbs the exposed ridge above Clogwyn Du'r Arddu. Looking north across the Pass of Llanberis, you can clearly pick out the jagged silhouette of Tryfan and the high plateau of Glyder Fawr.
  • Despite being the second-highest point in the country, it remains blissfully ignored by the majority of crowds on the neighbouring summit, proving that a 20-metre height difference and the absence of a café are remarkably effective at thinning out the tourists.
