About Millstone Hill
Sitting as a southerly outlier to the main Bennachie ridge, this heather-clad Marilyn offers a quieter alternative to its busier neighbours. While most crowds head for Mither Tap, the climb here rewards you with an unobstructed perspective across the Vale of Alford and the distant profiles of the Cairngorm plateaus.

Did You Know?
- •The name is literal; the hill’s granite was once prized for its quality and quarried specifically to produce millstones for the agricultural heartlands of Aberdeenshire.
- •Separated from the main granite massif by the Clachie Burn, this summit provides a unique 'side-on' view of the entire Bennachie range, including the Iron Age hillfort on Mither Tap.
- •Although lower than its famous neighbours, the hill's isolation earns it the status of a Marilyn, a classification for peaks with a drop of at least 150 metres on all sides.
- •The ascent is often quieter than the main Monymusk or Rowantree trails, following well-maintained forestry tracks before breaking out onto open, heathery moorland.
- •It serves as an excellent vantage point for the walker who appreciates the shape of Bennachie but prefers to look at the crowds rather than stand among them.
