About Bennachie - Oxen Craig

While Mither Tap claims the most iconic profile, Oxen Craig is the true summit of the Bennachie range. It offers a more expansive, moorland character than its rocky neighbor, providing an uninterrupted vantage point over the Garioch farmlands toward the distant, bulkier silhouettes of the Cairngorms.

Did You Know?

  • Bennachie’s name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Beinn na Cìche,' meaning 'hill of the breast.' This refers to the shapely profile of the neighbouring Mither Tap, though Oxen Craig out-tops it by eleven metres to claim the title of the highest point.
  • The summit features a granite toposcope installed in 1987. On a clear day, it helps walkers identify the distinctive profile of Tap o' Noth to the northwest, the massive plateau of Lochnagar to the southwest, and the Moray Firth to the north.
  • Oxen Craig is classified as a Marilyn, a Hump, and a Tump. This 'triple crown' of prominence classifications reflects its isolation; the hill dominates the surrounding lowlands and is visible from as far north as Longman Hill.
  • The lower slopes once housed the 'Bennachie Colonists,' a 19th-century community of landless squatters who built homes and carved out smallholdings on the common land before being forcibly evicted by local estate owners.
  • Most visitors consider their day finished upon reaching the iron-age hillfort at Mither Tap, leaving the true summit at Oxen Craig to those who prefer their views without the accompanying crowds.
