Did You Know?

  • Derived from the Scottish Gaelic 'Beinn Mhòr', the name translates simply as 'Great Mountain'. While it is a common name across the Highlands, here it is a literal description, marking the highest point for many miles.
  • From its trig pillar, the view encompasses the Firth of Clyde and the peaks of Arran to the south, while to the north, the Arrochar Alps and the distinctive jagged skyline of The Cobbler are prominently visible.
  • The mountain’s lower eastern flanks are home to the Benmore Botanic Garden, where walkers can pass through a towering avenue of Giant Redwoods, some of the oldest and tallest in Scotland, before reaching the open hillside.
  • With over 600 metres of topographic prominence, the summit stands in relative isolation, ensuring unobstructed views over the intricate coastline of the Argyll sea lochs and the distant Paps of Jura to the west.
  • Navigating the lower slopes through the Benmore forest requires more attention to the map than the summit itself, unless you enjoy the unique experience of being misplaced inside a world-class collection of rhododendrons.
