About this Route

This GPX follows the usual northern route up Tinto Hill from the car park near Fallburn. It is a 6.8 km out-and-back with 480 m of ascent, ending at the 711 m summit. The path is broad and clear for almost the whole walk, which makes the route easy to follow in good conditions, though it is rougher and steeper on the upper slope.

Go through the gate from the car park and pass the memorial bench. The main path climbs south across open hillside, curving around the shoulder of Totherin Hill. Ignore the fainter branch towards its cairn and stay on the heavily used route. As the gradient increases, the surface becomes stony and eroded in places. Continue towards the large summit cairn, with the trig point nearby. The top has a wide view over the Clyde Valley and the Southern Uplands when the air is clear. Return to Fallburn by the same path.

Tinto is popular and accessible, but the summit is exposed and often much colder than the car park. Cloud can remove the obvious visual line, and frost or snow makes the stony upper path slippery. Carry a waterproof and navigation backup, keep dogs controlled around livestock and give eroded sections time to dry rather than widening the path. On the descent, stay on the main curve past Totherin Hill so you do not follow the wrong spur.

A great little hill with commanding views of the Clyde Valley and a massive summit cairn.

Essential Tips

Stay on the main path

The usual route is very clear. Ignore the Totherin Hill branch and avoid shortcuts that widen the eroded ground.

Pack for the summit, not the car park

Tinto stands apart from nearby hills and catches wind. Bring a warm layer and waterproof even on a short outing.

Treat snow and ice seriously

The upper stones become slick in winter conditions. Use suitable footwear and carry traction or an ice axe when conditions require them.

Control dogs around stock

The lower hillside is grazed. Keep dogs close, use a lead near animals and never allow them to chase.
