About this Route
This GPX climbs Slieve Bearnagh from Trassey Track by Hare's Gap and returns the same way. It covers 10.4 km with about 641 m of ascent, usually taking 4½ to 6 hours. The approach is long and rocky, while the climb from Hare's Gap to the summit tors is steep and strenuous.
Follow Trassey Track into the mountains, passing field boundaries and the lower forest edge. The track becomes rougher as it climbs towards Hare's Gap, the clear notch between Slievenaglogh and Slieve Bearnagh. At the gap, turn west and follow the Mourne Wall up Bearnagh's steep eastern slope. Stone steps, granite blocks and peat lead to the gap between the two summit tors. The highest point is around 739 m; climbing exposed tor blocks is unnecessary.
Return to Hare's Gap and Trassey Track by the same line. This GPX does not continue over Slieve Meelmore or descend towards Ben Crom. The wall is a useful handrail but not a substitute for navigation, and the steep descent is slippery when wet or icy. Keep clear of damaged wall stones, choose simple ground around the tors and allow time for the long track out.
The Trassey Track grows rockier and steeper as it approaches Hare's Gap.

Route Waypoints
Start from the recognised parking area on Trassey Road. Spaces are limited, so keep gates and the road clear.
Follow the broad track into the valley, closing gates and staying on the public route.
Continue as the surface becomes rougher beside the forest edge and open mountain.
Climb towards the obvious notch in the Mourne Wall. Loose stones and water make the track tiring.
At the wall crossing, turn west for Slieve Bearnagh. Note the exact route back onto Trassey Track.
Follow the very steep wall-side path over peat, steps and granite blocks.
Reach the gap between the summit tors at about 739 m. Avoid exposed climbing on the tor blocks.
Descend beside the wall to Hare's Gap and retrace the full track to the road.
Essential Tips
The climb from Hare's Gap is much steeper than the approach suggests. Pace the long track conservatively.
The summit can be reached without exposed moves onto the highest blocks. Choose safe ground.
Do not climb, sit on or remove stones from the historic structure. Follow the worn path beside it.
Wet peat and granite steps are slippery. Descend slowly and keep space between walkers.
