About this Route
This GPX follows the standard tourist path from the Gale Road car park to Skiddaw by Jenkin Hill, returning the same way. It covers 9.1 km with about 635 m of ascent and usually takes 4 to 5½ hours. The path is broad and obvious in good weather, but the upper mountain is exposed, stony and frequently hidden by cloud.
Leave the high car park behind Latrigg and follow the main path north. It climbs steadily over the lower slopes and onto Jenkin Hill, where the angle briefly eases. Continue on the broad ridge, passing the routes around Lesser Man and Little Man before the final ascent to Skiddaw's long summit crest. The main trig point and shelter stand at 931 m, but several cairns lie along the ridge and can be confused in mist.
Return by the same Jenkin Hill path. This GPX does not descend over Ullock Pike or make a Bassenthwaite circuit. The route's popularity and wide track can give false confidence: wind chill, snow and poor visibility are common above 800 m. Carry a map and compass, check the mountain forecast and have another parking plan if Gale Road is full.
The standard Jenkin Hill path is obvious, but Skiddaw's broad summit ridge can still be disorientating in cloud.

Follow the sustained pitched and gravel path uphill. Do not cut the wide zigzags.

Climb the final broad stony ridge. Wind can be severe and the summit may remain hidden.
Reach the main trig point and shelter at 931 m. Confirm the south-going return direction.
Retrace the ridge and Jenkin Hill tourist path to the car park.
