Map & Elevation
About this Route
This GPX climbs Moel Famau from the upper Bwlch Penbarras car park and returns the same way. It covers 4.3 km with about 280 m of ascent, usually taking 1½ to 2½ hours. The path is broad and popular, but it is a proper hill walk with a sustained climb and an exposed summit.
Leave the car park on the signed route through Moel Famau Country Park. The path climbs north through forest-edge ground before reaching open moorland. Stone and gravel sections give a clear line towards the summit, with views opening across the Vale of Clwyd. The ruined Jubilee Tower dominates the final approach and marks the 555 m summit. There is some shelter within the stonework, but the top is often windy and busy.
Return to Bwlch Penbarras by the same path. This GPX does not continue along the Clwydian ridge or descend towards Moel Arthur. The upper route can be slippery, icy or hidden by snow, and cloud makes path junctions less obvious than expected. Parking charges and capacity vary, so check current council information and use only marked spaces.
The ruined Jubilee Tower makes the summit unmistakable, but the open ridge can still feel wild in poor weather.
