About this Route

This GPX follows the short stone-pitched path from Mam Nick car park to the summit of Mam Tor and returns the same way. It covers 1.4 km with about 96 m of ascent, so most walkers will need 45 to 75 minutes. The route is easy to follow, but the ridge is exposed and the path can be extremely busy.

Climb the steps from the small car park, follow the path beside the road and pass through the gate onto the hill. Stone pitching leads steadily up the south-west shoulder, replacing the old eroded path. Near the top, the remains of the Iron Age hillfort earthworks are visible around the ridge. The summit trig point stands at 517 m, with views into Edale, Hope Valley and along the Great Ridge in clear weather.

Return to Mam Nick by the same stone steps. This GPX does not continue along the Great Ridge to Hollins Cross or complete the National Trust's 4.8 km circular route. The car park often fills very early, particularly at weekends and sunrise, and illegal verge parking causes serious access problems. Use an alternative legal car park or public transport if it is full. Keep dogs on leads around grazing animals and take care on icy pitching.

The stone-surfaced footpath leads to one of the most dramatic vistas in the Peak District.

Essential Tips

Have a parking alternative

Mam Nick is very small and can fill by 9am at busy times. Never use double yellow lines, grass verges or access tracks.

Keep to the built path

The stone pitching protects fragile ground and hillfort archaeology. Do not cut corners.

Use leads around livestock

The National Trust asks for dogs to be kept on leads throughout this route because animals graze the hill.

Expect wind and ice

Mam Tor is exposed despite the short walk. Stone steps become treacherous when frozen.
