About this Route

This GPX climbs Lugnaquilla from the Glen of Imaal by the permitted Camarahill or Tourist Route and returns the same way. It covers 12.8 km with about 757 m of ascent, taking around 4½ to 6 hours. The climb is broad and grassy rather than technical, but the summit plateau is notoriously difficult to navigate in cloud.

From the start near Fenton's, follow the military access road and designated southern walking route towards Camarahill. The line passes between the North Prison and South Prison danger areas before climbing open slopes to Camarahill. Continue south-east and then east over increasingly featureless ground to Lugnaquilla's broad summit at 925 m, marked by a trig pillar and cairn. Steep corries fall away nearby, so stay on the approved line.

Return by Camarahill exactly as shown. This route crosses Defence Forces range land and must not be entered when red flags, flashing lights or sentries indicate live firing. Check the official closure page before travelling and obey every sign on the ground. Never touch shells or suspicious metal objects; note the location from a safe distance and report it. Even when open, carry a map and compass because the plateau can become completely disorientating.

Always stay on the designated routes for your own safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if the Glen of Imaal firing range is closed?
