About this Route

This GPX climbs Great Whernside from Kettlewell by the Top Mere path and returns the same way. It covers 8.2 km with about 504 m of ascent, and most walkers will need 3½ to 5 hours. The lower paths are easy to follow, while the upper moor is wet, open and much less distinct in poor visibility.

Leave Kettlewell on the signed paths rising east from the village, passing through fields and onto the fell. The route follows a clear track beside walls before continuing towards Top Mere. Beyond the enclosed ground, a moorland path climbs steadily over peat and grass towards the long summit ridge. Great Whernside's highest point is marked by a trig point and shelter among gritstone outcrops at 704 m. Several cairns and rocky bumps sit nearby, so check that you have reached the true summit.

Return by the same Top Mere route to Kettlewell. This GPX does not descend towards Park Rash or Nidderdale. The upper fell is notorious for bog and can be confusing in cloud, with fences and paths leading away from the return line. Carry a map and compass, wear waterproof boots and keep dogs close around livestock and ground-nesting birds.

The usual route rises from Kettlewell onto an easy-angled but exposed stretch of high moor.

Essential Tips

Expect deep bog

The upper route crosses peat that stays wet for long periods. Waterproof boots and gaiters are worthwhile.

Identify the true summit

Several rocky points sit along the ridge. Use the map and trig point rather than stopping at the first cairn.

Protect nesting birds

Keep to the path and keep dogs close during the breeding season on the open moor.

Take a return bearing

Cloud can hide Kettlewell and Top Mere. Record the south-west return direction before leaving the summit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to climb Great Whernside from Kettlewell?

Most walkers need 3½ to 5 hours to complete the 8.3 km route. The official estimate using Naismith's Rule is about 2½ hours, but that doesn't account for conditions like deep bog or poor visibility.

Is the path to Great Whernside well marked?

It depends on where you are. The lower field paths and walled tracks are clear and easy to follow, but the upper moorland becomes wet, open, and much less distinct—especially in poor visibility.

How do I know when I've reached the actual summit of Great Whernside?

Look for the trig point and shelter at 704 m among gritstone outcrops. Several rocky bumps and cairns sit nearby, so don't assume the first cairn you see is the true summit—check your map.
