This GPX climbs Great Links Tor from the Fox and Hounds on the A386, going by Arms Tor and returning the same way. It covers 6.0 km with about 324 m of ascent and usually takes 2½ to 3½ hours. There is no long approach, but the moor is wet, exposed and much harder to read when mist comes down.
Leave the roadside start on the public path heading east onto the open moor. The route climbs gradually towards Arms Tor, crossing rough grass, peat and several wet channels. From the tor, continue north-east over broad ground to Great Links Tor. The final approach becomes rockier, with a prominent granite outcrop and summit cairn at about 586 m. Although the military range lies nearby, this GPX stays outside the marked firing-range boundary.
Return over Arms Tor to the Fox and Hounds. Do not cross red-and-white range posts or enter signed military land, regardless of what another track or app appears to show. The route has few sheltered landmarks between the tors, and paths spread into several trods around boggy ground. Carry a map and compass, check the weather and keep the road crossing in mind for the finish. Dartmoor ponies and livestock may be present, so give them room and keep dogs under control.
Great Links Tor is easy to recognise in clear weather; the real work is finding the same clean line back across the moor.

Route Waypoints
Start beside the A386 near the Fox and Hounds. Use permitted parking and take great care when crossing or walking beside the fast road.
Pass onto open access land and follow the path east. Note the gate and roadside position for the return in poor visibility.
Cross rough grass and peat, choosing established lines around boggy patches without drifting towards the range boundary.
Climb the broad western side of Arms Tor. The path becomes stonier near the granite outcrop.
Reach the tor and continue north-east. Take a bearing for Great Links Tor if cloud is hiding the next objective.
Cross the exposed dip between the tors. Ignore tracks leading towards military warning posts.
Reach the granite summit area at about 586 m. Scrambling onto exposed blocks is optional and unnecessary for completing the route.
Retrace Arms Tor and the moor gate to the roadside start. Slow down before stepping onto the verge.

Firm-looking grass can hide deep peat and water. Waterproof boots and gaiters are useful after rain.
Arms Tor and Great Links Tor disappear quickly in mist. Take bearings before leaving each rocky landmark.
Traffic passes the start at speed. Park fully clear of the carriageway and cross only where sight lines are good.
