About this Route

This GPX climbs Dufton Pike from Dufton by way of Pusgill and the south ridge, returning the same way. It is 5.2 km long with about 302 m of ascent. Allow 2 to 3 hours; the walk is short, but the upper slope is steep and the paths can be muddy or faint.

Leave Dufton on the lane and field paths towards Pusgill, passing through enclosed farmland before reaching open access ground. The route turns onto the south ridge, where the climb becomes more direct. A trodden path follows the broad back of the pike, with views opening across the Eden Valley and towards the higher North Pennines. The final slope leads to the summit cairn at 481 m. Dufton Pike is modest beside Cross Fell, but its isolated position gives it a surprisingly wide outlook.

Return down the same south ridge and through Pusgill to Dufton. This GPX does not make the longer circuit using the Pennine Way or Hurning Lane. Field gates, livestock and several paths near the village need a little care, while the open ridge is exposed to wind. Keep dogs close, avoid cutting across crops and carry a map or downloaded mapping in case cloud hides the surrounding landmarks.

Dufton Pike is small beside Cross Fell, but from its summit the Eden Valley feels spread out at your feet.

Essential Tips

Follow field waymarks

The approach crosses working farmland. Use the signed rights of way, close gates and do not enter farmyards unless directed.

Control dogs around stock

Sheep and cattle may be present from the village to the open fell. Keep dogs on a lead whenever livestock is nearby.

Take care on wet grass

The south ridge is steep enough to be awkward on descent. Footwear with a good heel and tread is useful.

Do not drift into a circuit

Paths beyond the summit lead towards longer North Pennines routes. Return by the same south ridge shown in the GPX.
