About this Route
This GPX climbs Diamond Hill from the Connemara National Park Visitor Centre using the waymarked Lower and Upper Diamond Hill trails. It reaches the 442 m summit and returns along the same main line, covering 6.3 km with about 387 m of ascent. Allow 2½ to 4 hours, depending on weather and how busy the path is.
Start on the surfaced trail from the visitor centre and follow signs for Diamond Hill. The lower loop crosses heath and bog on a mixture of gravel path and boardwalk. At the upper-trail junction, continue uphill as the path becomes steeper, using stone steps and pitched sections to gain the ridge. The final approach is exposed but well defined in clear weather, with views across Kylemore, the Twelve Bens and the Atlantic coast. The summit area is small and can become crowded, so make space for other walkers and stay on the constructed path.
Return by retracing the ascent shown in this GPX, watching signs carefully where the upper and lower trails meet. This line is not the complete official upper circuit, which may use a different descent. The maintained surface makes navigation simpler than on many Connemara hills, but it does not remove the effects of wind, rain or low cloud. Bring waterproofs, water and footwear with grip, and check current park notices before starting.
The built path makes the route easy to follow, but the upper ridge is still open to Atlantic weather.

Route Waypoints
Start at the visitor centre and follow signs for Diamond Hill. Check opening, parking and trail notices before leaving.
Use the surfaced path across open heath. Keep to the trail to protect the surrounding blanket bog.
Cross the wetter ground on boardwalk. It can be slippery after rain, so slow down and allow room when passing.
Choose the signed Upper Diamond Hill route. Note this junction because the GPX returns through it later.
Climb the pitched path as the hill steepens. Take care on loose gravel and give descending walkers priority where sensible.
Reach the exposed upper ridge. Wind can be much stronger here than at the visitor centre.
Arrive at the 442 m summit viewpoint. Stay within the worn area and keep clear of steep ground in cloud or strong wind.
Retrace the ridge, steps and lower trail junction to the visitor centre, following the GPX where routes divide.
Essential Tips
Weather damage or maintenance can close sections of trail. Use the visitor centre noticeboard or official park updates before setting out.
Boardwalk and stone pitching protect fragile bog and heath. Do not cut corners, even when the trail is busy.
The upper ridge is exposed to Atlantic weather. Carry a waterproof and warm layer on apparently settled days.
Diamond Hill is popular. Start early, keep the summit stop compact and let faster walkers pass on safe ground.
