About this Route
This GPX climbs Cronk ny Arrey Laa from The Sloc on the south-west coast of the Isle of Man. It is a short out-and-back route of 3.3 km with about 240 m of ascent. Allow 1½ to 2½ hours, giving yourself time for the steep ground and the wide coastal views from the 437 m summit.
Leave The Sloc parking area and pick up the moorland path climbing away from the road. The ascent is direct, rising through rough grass and heather with the sea behind you. Although the line is fairly simple in clear weather, smaller sheep tracks cross the slope and can pull you away from the ridge. The upper section eases before the final walk to the summit cairn. There is little shelter anywhere on the hill, and the top is often windy even when conditions by the road feel calm.
Return to The Sloc by the same path. This GPX does not continue along the coast towards Niarbyl and it is not a section of the full Raad ny Foillan. The ground can be wet, tussocky and slippery, while low cloud quickly removes the coastal landmarks that make navigation easy. Wear boots with grip, carry a map or downloaded mapping alongside the GPX and keep control of dogs around sheep.
It is a small hill with a big horizon, and the sea stays with you for most of the climb.

Start from the roadside parking area at The Sloc. Park clear of the road and locate the uphill moorland path before setting off.
Follow the path away from the road through rough grass. Ignore sheep trods contouring across the hillside.
The gradient increases on the direct ascent. Wet turf can be slick, so use short steps and keep away from eroded edges.
Pause on the shoulder for views along the south-west coast. This is also a useful place to check the return line to The Sloc.
Continue over broader, exposed ground. In mist, follow a bearing rather than relying on the faint path.
The slope eases as the cairn comes into view. Stay on durable ground to avoid widening wet sections of path.
Reach the 437 m summit. There is little shelter, so do not linger if wind or cloud is worsening.
Retrace the same moorland path to the road. Check the GPX where cross paths and sheep tracks meet the descent.
Essential Tips
The hill is fully exposed to Atlantic weather. Carry a windproof layer even on a bright day at sea level.
Sheep are common on the open moor. Use a lead around livestock and during lambing periods.
Crossing trods can be misleading. Check the GPX and compass if the main line becomes unclear.
The short descent is steep enough to be awkward on wet grass. Boots or trail shoes with an aggressive sole are best.
