About this Route
This GPX makes a direct climb from Belfast Castle to McArt's Fort on Cave Hill and returns by the same route. It is 3.1 km long with about 295 m of ascent. Most walkers will need 1½ to 2½ hours, allowing time for the steep steps and the view over Belfast Lough.
Begin at Belfast Castle and follow the park paths uphill through woodland. The route passes near the Devil's Punchbowl and the caves that give the hill its name before climbing more sharply towards the open upper slope. Stone and timber steps lead onto the plateau, followed by a short walk to McArt's Fort, the earthwork on the highest accessible part of this route. The ground falls away steeply on the city side, so stay well back from the edge, particularly in wind or poor visibility.
Return to the castle on the same path. This GPX is shorter than the full Cave Hill Country Park circuit and does not complete the longer loop around the hill. Despite its urban setting, the climb is steep, muddy after rain and exposed at the top. Cattle may be grazing in the park, and the route can be busy at weekends. Wear shoes with grip, keep dogs under close control and allow other walkers room on the narrow steps.
The city drops away quickly, but the final climb still feels like a proper hill.

Start at the castle and use the uphill park path. Check local signs, as path diversions occasionally affect the country park.
Continue beyond the upper parking area into the woodland. Follow signs for Cave Hill and McArt's Fort.
The path rises through trees and can be muddy underfoot. Keep to the surfaced line at junctions.
Pass the hollow below the cliffs. Do not leave the path to approach unstable rock or steep ground.
The route passes beneath the caves. Treat them as a viewpoint from the path rather than attempting to climb into them.
Climb the steep flight onto open ground. The steps can be slippery and are awkward when walkers are descending.
Reach the earthwork and viewpoint above Belfast at about 368 m. Keep well back from the steep cliff edge.
Descend the same steps and woodland path. At junctions, retrace the outward route rather than following the longer circuit.
Essential Tips
McArt's Fort has steep drops close to the popular viewpoint. Give the edge extra room in strong wind, mist or when the ground is wet.
Cattle may be present. Keep dogs on a short lead near livestock and follow all signs in the country park.
Woodland mud, wet steps and polished stones make ordinary trainers a poor choice after rain.
The castle and summit are popular. Start early if you prefer a quieter walk and take care when passing on the upper steps.
